'The Red Light Is The Equalizer' or 'Bridgera #2' (Graphic Illustration 2012)
The 'Bridgera' project focuses on the 'bridge' from one 'era' to another. This means that today in India, we are surrounded by a fusion of vastly opposing economic states. The omnipresent shopping malls, towering offices and luxury apartments in New Delhi 'overspill' cities such as Noida and Gurgaon cannot blot out the village culture grounding its overall landscape. Yes, we are witnessing bold signs of change in India in general as it moves towards becoming an economic superpower... or arguably, becoming an even BIGGER economic superpower but when we see the street food vendors doing their rounds literally outside such luxury malls, among the chaotic sea of auto rickshaws with the drivers falling over each other to welcome shoppers into their vehicles... or the sheer opposing modes of transport waiting at the same red traffic light... These sights really add weight to the notion of fast paced industry and consumerism against a backdrop more akin to the past. Ultimately, it's all too irresistable NOT to draw any inspiration from. |
